The Omniscience Of God

When studying Genesis 22 God's omniscience, to some people, comes into question. Why would God tempt or "test" Abraham if He already knew what the outcome of that test would be? Especially, why would God test Abraham with such an inherently wrong thing to do as to murder his own son? If God were not all knowing, including having a knowledge of the future, then perhaps God would have needed to find out whether or not Abraham was capable or willing to be faithful to the covenant that He had made with him. A lot was riding on Abraham's willingness and ability to keep God as the most important thing in his life, even more important than his only son. Through Isaac, God told Abraham the Christ would come and mankind would have salvation. If God is not omniscient, He might have had a need to test whether he and Isaac were the right choice for such a covenant. However, if God is omniscient, then He would have allowed Abraham to prove to himselfand be able to show Isaac that they could believe the covenant between them was valid. The Word of God shows us of God's omniscience. It shows us that He knows all things, the past, present, the future, the consequences of our actions, and every little thing there is to know about us. A God with such knowledge of all things would not have a need to test Abraham. The following scriptures illustrate Almighty God's omniscience.

God knows all things

Psalm 139:1-24
To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me. [2] Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. [3] Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. [4] For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether. [5] Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. [6] Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it. [7] Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? [8] If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. [9] If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; [10] Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. [11] If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. [12] Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee. [13] For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. [14] I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. [15] My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. [16] Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. [17] How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! [18] If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee. [19] Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloody men. [20] For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy name in vain. [21] Do not I hate them, O Lord, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee? [22] I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies. [23] Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: [24] And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

God is unique.

Isaiah 40:13-14
Who hath directed the Spirit of the Lord, or being his counsellor hath taught him? [14] With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding?

God knows all things. He knows the past, the present and the future. :

Isaiah 42:9
Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them.
Jeremiah 38:17-18
Then said Jeremiah unto Zedekiah, Thus saith the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; If thou wilt assuredly go forth unto the king of Babylon's princes, then thy soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and thou shalt live, and thine house: [18] But if thou wilt not go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand.

Knows our secret sins:

Psalm 90:8
Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.

God knows our thoughts and our motives:

Proverbs 24:12
If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works?

God's thoughts and capabilities our beyond our comprehension.

Isaiah 55:8
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.
Romans 11:33
O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

God knows our words before we speak them:

Psalm 139:4
For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether.

God knows the exact number of days we have to live:

Psalm 139:16
Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.

God doesn't change His mind

Numbers 23:19
God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?
1 Samuel 15:29
And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent.

God is perfect in Knowledge

Job 37:16
Dost thou know the balancings of the clouds, the wondrous works of him which is perfect in knowledge?

God sees all of mankind, forms our hearts and thinks about everything we do.

Psalm 33:13-15
The Lord looketh from heaven; he beholdeth all the sons of men. [14] From the place of his habitation he looketh upon all the inhabitants of the earth. [15] He fashioneth their hearts alike; he considereth all their works.

God has infinite understanding

He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names. [5] Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite.

God makes known the end from the beginning, the ancient times and what is yet to come.

Isaiah 46:9-10
Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, [10] Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:

God knows what we want before we ask him.

Isaiah 65:24
And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.
Matthew 6:8
Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

A good example of an anthropomorphic description of God which describes God's activities in a human manner. In these verses God is speaking analogously, condescending to man's level so that man can better understand the heart and the ways of God. This passage is an example of the figure of speech "condenscencio":

Genesis 18:20-21
And the Lord said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous; [21] I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.
